Food Allergen Safety Program

ZEGO BARS ARE CRAFTED WITHOUT THE MOST COMMON ALLERGENIC INGREDIENTS.  OUR SHARED FACILITY HAS CAREFUL ALLERGEN CONTROL PROCEDURES TO MINIMIZE CROSS CONTACT WITH PEANUTS,TREE NUTS, SOY, DAIRY AND EGG WHICH ARE PROCESSED ON THE SAME EQUIPMENT AS ZEGO® BARS.  WE ALSO TAKE THE EXTRA SAFETY STEP OF TESTING EACH BATCH FOR THE ALLERGENS BELOW AND LINKING THE RESULTS TO EACH BAR SO YOU CAN DECIDE IF ZEGO BARS ARE RIGHT FOR YOU.

We test a sample from each batch for the following top allergenic foods.

The tests have a 95% confidence level and are performed by the Food Allergy Research and Resource Project (FARRP), based at the University of Nebraska. Due to testing limitations, we are unable to test for walnut, pecan, and pistachio, which are also processed on the equipment we use, but for other companies.

Amounts of 2.5 parts per million or greater can be detected by the tests. A PPM, or part per million, is the equivalent of approximately one grain of sand spread out among 20 ZEGO bars (one kilogram). If an amount under 2.5PPM were in the batch, our testing would not pick it up.  This is why our tests results say “no measureable amount” and not “zero.”

We provide you with allergen testing results so you will have as much information as we can give you to make your purchasing and consumption decisions. Sample testing provides valuable data but is not as a guarantee of safety for allergic individuals. Because of testing limitations, we were unable to test for walnuts, pecans or pistachios, which are tree nuts processed on the same equipment as ZEGO bars but far less frequently than the other potential allergens tested. For more information about these results, please go to the FOOD ALLERGEN SAFETY PROGRAM Tab on our website.

Hi, I’m Colleen. In my house of 5, I juggle Celiac Disease, food allergies, sugar-sensitivity and nut-free schools, finding the right nutrition is a big part of our lives. I owe my passion for tasty food to, well, tasty food!

I created ZEGO with Jonathan because, as a mom, I needed a product like ZEGO. I knew that a high protein snack mid-morning helps children move what they have learned into long-term memory.

The challenge for me was that most of my kids are gluten-intolerant and sugar-sensitive, AND they go to schools that are peanut and tree nut-free–oiy veh! Meat, cheese and lentil soup needed to be chilled or occasionally went off like a time bomb in their backpacks (and my kids were tired of them). I was hard-pressed to find other options to provide protein in a convenient, tasty and healthy snack that wouldn’t set off their or their classmates’ allergies.

We designed ZEGO to be a safe and delicious snack that supports learning and fuels growing bodies. Now, my kids don’t ask what they can bring to school for snack, they ask, “Mom, where are the ZEGOS?!”

Jonathan Shambroom Co-Founder

I’ve been an athlete my whole life, thanks to my dad, my hero. He was my first ski instructor, soccer coach, and a lifelong training partner (not to mention best friend). I began studying nutrition as part of my quest for peak performance in sports. At Connecticut College I played varsity soccer and was captain of the ski team. I have sought out great nutrition to enhance my performance for many years as an avid athlete and now as a devoted dad.

What to eat before, during or after any long ride, or race, or workout? Something you don’t get sick of, but gives you good energy, and actually tastes good? My cycling friends and I constantly search for better answers here.

My study of nutrition deepened when both of my parents were diagnosed with Cancer and passed away 8 years ago.

In my pursuit of trustworthy nutrition information – both for sports and for healthy living and disease prevention, I met Colleen during a class at UCSF. We bonded over our passion for nutrition that works in today’s world where allergies are more prominent than ever, parents have less time than ever, but kids and athletes still want and need healthy snacks that taste great.

Improving nutrition for low-income kids

Supporting Children’s Nutrition: ZEGO believes all children should have nutritious food so they can reach even higher for the stars. ZEGO donates twenty percent of our profits to A Better Course (formerly called Campaign for Better Nutrition), a non-profit dedicated to improving the nutrition low-income kids receive at home and at school.

ABC Philosophy

Nutrition is the foundation of a healthy mind and body, and the food we prepare and eat with each other, strengthens the threads that knit our families and communities together.

We believe all children should be nurtured by the food they eat but often what we see is that the food children eat causes behavior and health problems, triggering long-term metabolic diseases as well as immediate life-threatening reactions due to food allergies and asthma.

Poor nutrition also inhibits children’s working memory and concentration as well as their ability to set goals and correctly evaluate and prioritize options, making it harder for them to benefit from their education.

The reasons for poor childhood nutrition are many fold and stretch from farms to homes and communities. We believe there is A Better Course for America to create healthy childhoods, productive adulthoods, and thriving communities.
